The shoulder is one of the most mobile and versatile joints in the body. It can move in a large variety of ways that often include a combination of directions to achieve a certain motion.

Unfortunately, this level of mobility brings with it an inherent reduction in stability as compared to another ball-and-socket joints, such as the hip.
Most people commonly see issues in the shoulder that fall under one or more of three descriptions: stiff, weak, or immobile. A frozen shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) would classify in the stiff and weak category. A rotator cuff tear would likely be in the weak category. Shoulder instability would be the immobile and weak category.

Empower Physical Therapy treats ALL types of shoulder issues and works with you to determine what the best plan of care is for you. Nearly all shoulder issues (including muscle tears) can and will benefit from more movement and strengthening, and your physical therapist will work with you to determine where the best place is to start!
We are dedicated to helping you regain mobility, reduce pain, and improve the overall health of your knees.

At Empower Physical Therapy we have therapists trained not only to identify the issue but on interventions to help symptoms subside typically in just a few visits.

Headaches, while common, can be debilitating and they are caused by a wide range of issues. Headaches can also be from unresolved concussion. Understanding their causes is key to treating headaches and concussions.

Common types of headaches include: Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Cluster Headaches, Cervicogenic Headaches, and even Concussion Headaches. Concussion headaches can easily be differentiated by testing we conduct at the clinic.

What are physical treatments for headaches?

Treatment options for headache include: manual physical therapy: including trigger point release, cervical manipulation and mobilization, and cervical decompression. We may also use dry needling and strength training. Headache relief can always be achieved in the short term through manual physical therapy, however, these headaches will return if we do not strengthen the cervical spine. We focus heavily on functional overhead strengthening exercises in order to strengthen the cervical spine in order to reduce the occurrence of headaches and to permanently resolve them.

What are physical treatments for concussions?

Concussion symptoms can vary widely. They vary from tinnitus or ringing in the ears, headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to bright lights, loud sounds, and being overstimulated by environments. An evaluation with our therapists will determine if you could be suffering from an unresolved concussion and if physical therapy is a treatment option. Treatment for concussion typically consists of some cardio or aerobic activity in order to improve the healing process. Vestibular and multitasking exercises are also included in the concussion treatment and are the main focus. To resolve concussion, strength training for the head and neck is also included in treatment plans to reduce occurrence of headaches, and to improve the stability of the spine.

Speech therapy also can be particularly useful after a stroke. Our speech therapist works with individuals who lose their ability to speak, have a difficult time thinking of words or using the right words after a stroke (aphasia), or deal with sounding different or having slurred speech after a stroke (dysarthria). Additionally, some individuals lose their ability to swallow (dysphagia) or have a hard time chewing following a stroke and they can have muscle weakness in the mouth that leaves food in the cheeks. Just like rehabilitating your body, speech therapists have exercises that can help make the swallow mechanism stronger and safer.

It’s important to note that stroke rehabilitation is individualized, as the effects of a stroke can vary widely from one person to another.
