Parkinson's Treatment at Empower
Improve walking, balance and more with the LSVT BIG program!
What is the LSVT BIG Program?
We offer this program at our Newton, Andover, and Hesston clinics!
LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) BIG is an approach to exercise therapy intended to help patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions use bigger movements throughout daily life.
Rather than waiting until Parkinson’s limits movement, LSVT BIG promotes early adoption of exercise-based physical therapy to develop healthy habits.
LSVT BIG might be right for you if you sometimes shuffle or drag your feet; take short, choppy steps while walking; walk more slowly than your family or friends; or feel unsteady or imbalanced.
What Will My Physical Therapy Be Like?
We’ll talk about your symptoms, medical history, and goals before completing a movement assessment. Depending on your symptoms, your evaluation may also include strength, flexibility, posture, balance, and core assessments.
The protocol for the LSVT program includes:
16 sessions: four consecutive days a week for four weeks
Up to one-hour sessions, 1:1 with your PT
Daily homework practice
Daily exercises to perform during the program and afterward
FAQs About the Parkinson's LSVT Program at Empower!
Kansas is a direct access state, so you do NOT need a referral. You can call today and get scheduled. However, some state insurances require an authorization and a referral helps get PT approved. A referral on file can help us see you for long-term if warranted (over 3 months).
Our LSVT-trained physical therapists can still help you make improvements in your balance and walking! This program has been studied at attending 4 times a week for 4 weeks, which is why it's recommended. But we can accommodate all schedules and availabilities!
Our typical session is 40-60 minutes, both for your first visit and follow up appointments.
Ideally we want you to commit fully to the 4 weeks to fulfill the requirements of the LSVT program. It is challenging to address other pains or problems while trying to also complete the LSVT requirements. You can always schedule PT beyond the 4 weeks for another body part or diagnosis!
